CARNIVAL SATURDAY JULY 8TH 2017
This Years Carnival was opened by Richard Sneekes who has an extensive career in local football.
He introduces himself below.
I started as a Youth player at Ajax Amsterdam, and made 22 appearances for Netherlands National School boys. I made my debut for Ajax at the age of 16, and broke through into the Netherlands U21 team, but never quite fulfilled my potential for the club and was transferred out at the age of 21.
I started my career in English football with Bolton Wanderers whom I signed for in August 1994 for £200,000. I was part of their team that won promotion to the Premier League that season, but was a casualty the following season when Bolton struggled in the Premier League and was transferred shortly before the end of the season. Whilst at Bolton I played in the 1995 Football League Cup Final
I signed for West Bromwich Albion in March 1996 for £400,000. The manager at the time was Alan Buckley. Despite Buckley claiming it would take a while to settle in this was not the case. I almost immediately became a Baggies favourite at The Hawthorns and many of the crowd took to wearing long blond wigs - even the club shop was selling them. I finished my first season with ten goals from thirteen games, arguably for some Albion fans saving them from relegation. I spent seven wonderful seasons at West Brom before finally being transferred at the start of the 2001–02 season. After my retirement in 2007, I went on to captain West Bromwich Albion in the Midlands 'Masters' and have done so ever since. I scored in the 2008 and 2011 tournaments.
I eventually retired from professional football at the age of 34.
During my coaching career to date I have had spells with Tamworth, Hereford United and Rushall Olympic,
In November 2016 I was named as the new manager of Sutton Coldfield Town, replacing Neil Tooth. I’m combining my coaching with working in local schools.
Since moving to West Bromwich Albion I have made the Midlands my adopted home, I have always been made to feel welcome since the first day I set foot on the Hawthorns turf.
When I was approached to open your Carnival I was only too happy to accept, it is a pleasure to be involved in this community occasion.
I wish The Rotary club of Wednesbury every success for today and for the future Richard Sneekes
